MoonSol vs Solana CLI: Pay 0.2 SOL or Pay in Setup

The Solana CLI is the cheapest path in SOL if you already install the toolchain, manage a keypair, pin metadata, and talk to Raydium yourself. Pricing already says this. MoonSol charges 0.2 SOL (plus optional 0.1 SOL revokes, 0.4 SOL site, 0.1 SOL pool) to collapse that setup into signed transactions from a browser wallet.

MoonSol publishes this comparison. CLI on-chain floor is protocol rent + Metaplex, not $0. .

Who each product is

Solana CLI + spl-token + Metaplex

Official / ecosystem tools. spl-token create-token, metadata via Token-2022 --enable-metadata or Metaplex Token Metadata. You operate a keypair file. Errors in metadata JSON are yours.

MoonSol

The same class of on-chain objects — an SPL or Token-2022 mint, Metaplex metadata, an IPFS logo — produced by a form. Non-custodial. See About.

Feature matrix

Network and rent figures are order-of-magnitude, aligned with pricing. About 0.01–0.02 SOL in network and rent on either path.

Setup vs fee

CLI path, numbered — no copy-paste mainnet commands that go stale:

  1. Install the Solana tool suite

Configure an RPC you trust. This is the hour most first-timers underestimate.

  2. Fund a keypair

A file on disk, or a hardware path via CLI flags. Losing the file is losing the mint authority.

  3. Create the mint

A classic mint has no name until metadata exists. spl-token create-token is not a branded token yet.

  4. Add metadata and host the JSON

Metaplex or Token-2022 metadata plus an image URI you pin yourself.

  5. Create an ATA and mint supply

Then optionally disable mint and freeze. Then open a pool somewhere that is not the CLI.

MoonSol path: connect wallet → form → one or a few signatures. Walkthrough: how to create a Solana token. Saving ~0.2 SOL is rational for someone who already does steps 1–5. It is a poor trade for a first mint on mainnet.

When the CLI is the better product

  • You ship tokens often and the toolchain is already installed.
  • You need a flag or Token-2022 extension MoonSol does not expose.
  • You cannot accept a third-party front end on principle — use the official docs.

When MoonSol is the better product

  • This is your first SPL mint.
  • You want logo + metadata without running a Metaplex CLI and hosting a URI yourself.
  • You will also revoke authorities and open Raydium in the same product.

Pros and cons

MoonSol: faster; IPFS; pool tool; costs 0.2 SOL+. CLI: minimum SOL; maximum control; hours of setup; you are the support desk.

Questions people ask

Is the CLI free?

There is no platform fee. You still pay rent and the Metaplex protocol fee — about 0.01–0.02 SOL, same as the network line on MoonSol.

Does MoonSol deploy non-standard programs?

No. SPL or Token-2022 plus Metaplex — the same asset type the CLI produces. See About.

Can I create on CLI then use MoonSol tools?

Often yes for pool and revoke if you still hold the authorities. We do not promise every third-party mint will show up in every tool.
