What the update metadata tool does

A Sui coin's display information lives in a CoinMetadata object: name, symbol, description, and icon URL. Updating it fixes the branding that wallets and explorers show, without republishing the Move package or changing the coin type.

  • Updates the CoinMetadata object that wallets and explorers read.
  • Requires the metadata to be mutable and the relevant capability to be held by your wallet.
  • The coin type and all balances are unaffected — only the display fields change.
  • Wallets and explorers cache metadata, so allow time for the new icon to appear everywhere.

How to use the Sui update metadata tool

  1. Connect your wallet

    Connect the wallet holding the capability for your coin.

  2. Edit the fields

    Update name, symbol, description, and icon URL as needed.

  3. Confirm

    Approve the transaction to write the new metadata on-chain.

01Why has my new icon not appeared?

Caching. The on-chain object updates immediately, but wallets and explorers refresh their own copies on their own schedule.

02Can I change the coin symbol after publishing?

Yes, while metadata is mutable. The coin type itself is fixed by the published package, so exchanges and indexers still identify the coin by type, not by symbol.

03Does this change my coin type?

No. The coin type comes from the published Move package and cannot change. Only display metadata is editable.
